"…disguise thyself, that thou be not known…why feignest thou thyself to be another?" Here, again, the true Word of God interprets itself. The meaning of "feign" is to act like another. In our story, the person acted like someone they were not, because they didn’t' want to be recognized for who and what they really were. Many Christians sit in their dressing rooms, putting on religious make-up prior to going out on life's stage, before their awaiting audience.

If we believers had an Academy Award night, I doubt there would be enough "Oscars" to go around for the best actor. Why this pretense? Simple; our lives are spent in running from our humanity. "[Y]e shall be as gods…" appeals to us much more than the appalling thought of being human. Constant fear grips us that someone may see our blemishes and warts. Thus, we sit before our mirrors of vanity, putting on our spiritual face. The Pharisees were all exceptional actors.

Spiritual and theatrical are not the same.
